JAMES GRUNDY has shared his thoughts on the resignation of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.
The Conservative MP for Leigh commented after more than 50 government ministers and aides had quit by Thursday, July 7 - all but forcing the Prime Minister to leave his post.
The news follows a string of controversies in No 10; which culminated with the allegations that Mr Johnson knew about claims of sexual misconduct against Chris Pincher before appointing him as his deputy chief whip.
Mr Grundy, who was present at Boris Johnson's resignation speech this afternoon, said that the work that he did in Government made Leigh matter.
In an online statement, he said: "It was an immense honour to be invited to attend 10 Downing Street today to attend the resignation speech of the Prime Minister. A historic moment, and for me, a sad one.
"The work of Government must continue, Brexit must be preserved, and the Levelling Up of left behind towns like Leigh must be delivered.
"The fact that the BBC were in Leigh this morning shows that Boris Johnson made our town matter, our voices matter.
"For that, I thank him. Whoever replaces him as PM must ensure that the voices of people in Leigh and communities like it continue to matter and be heard."
Following Boris Johnson's resignation, an election for a new party leader is likely to take place in the coming weeks.
It is understood that he will stay in his post until a new leader is selected.
