FIREFIGHTERS were called to extinguish a blaze in a former pub building.

Crews attended the Masons Arms building on Wigan Road, Atherton, on Bank Holiday Monday evening, August 29.

Three fire engines attended and were at the scene for around 45 minutes.

A Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said: "At around 6,30pm on Monday, August 29, firefighters were called to reports of a fire involving the first floor of a derelict pub on Wigan Road in Atherton.

“Three fire engines from Leigh, Hindley and Atherton fire stations quickly attended the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire and clear smoke from the building.

“Firefighters were in attendance for approximately 45 minutes.”
