A HISTORIC local mill was chosen as the "perfect setting" for the conclusion of a major storyline in Coronation Street last month.

With ITV producers wanting a secluded and historic space to end a kidnapping story in the famous soap, Ena Mill, on Flapper Fold Lane in Atherton, was seen as the perfect location.

As a "huge Corrie fan", this was a dream come true for Mill owner Simon Yates, who got to watch from behind the scenes and meet all of the cast and crew.

The scene was filmed overnight around two months ago and finally aired on Friday, September 23.

Simon, who had to remain tight-lipped about the filming, said: "We are huge Corrie fans so it was absolutely brilliant to be asked to film at this location and see it all come together.

"We love the show so it was amazing to be there and stand with the crew, and also to meet all the actors and producers who were so lovely.

"We have been waiting for the episode to air but it blew me away to see it on our TV screens with the Mill in the background, and the scene was exactly like how we saw it in person."

Completed in 1903, Ena Mill is a former cotton mill which has provided employment in Atherton for more than a century.

After manufacturing ceased in the late 1990s, it was primarily used for warehousing and distribution until 2010.

The Grade II listed site was taken over by Simon and his business partner Jonathon Addis a year later, and is now a converted retail store complete with a restaurant and clothing and garden ranges.

With the Coronation Street scene later streamed on Gogglebox, this means that the historic location was beamed to millions of people across the country.

After the success of ITV's filming, Simon said that the Mill has been again chosen as the location for a Channel 4 Italia 90 documentary that will air in the run-up to the Qatar World Cup this November.
