LEIGH MP James Grundy invited the Prime Minister to congratulate Leigh Centurions on their recent promotion and to confirm a Downing Street reception for the victorious Lionesses, including Ella Toone.

Mr Grundy spoke in the House of Commons during Prime Minister's Questions today, Wednesday, October 19.

Leigh secured their promotion to rugby league's top-flight with a Championship Grand Final win over Batley earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Tyldesley's Ella Toone scored a goal to help the England Women's Football team win the European Cup Cup final at Wembley in July, beating Germany 2-1.

During PMQs Mr Grundy said: "Would my Right Honourable friend congratulate Leigh Centurions rugby league team on their recent promotion to Super League bringing millions to the local economy?

"And furthermore, would she also guarantee that our excellent women's Euros team, including Ella Toone, from my constituency, Tyldesley, will receive the Number 10 reception that they so deserve?"

Prime Minister Liz Truss responded: "I join my Right Honourable friend in congratulating the Leigh Centurions on their return to the Super League.

"I had the huge privilege of meeting the Lionesses last week, a fantastic team who won a major tournament for us. We will host a Downing Street reception as soon as their training programme makes them available."

Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, a well-known supporter of the 13-man code, quipped: "I look forward to a rugby league invite too!"
