A DECADES-OLD newsagents closed its doors for the final time last week.

Serving customers in Leigh for the best part of 30 years, News Today & Cannings announced its closure on Saturday, November 26.

An ever-present figure at Spinning Gate shopping centre, lingering financial difficulties from covid and now the cost of living crisis has made the business unsustainable.

Karen Cox, Centre Manager at Spinning Gate commented: “It is extremely sad news following the closure of News Today within Spinning Gate Shopping Centre.

"They have been part of the centre for three decades and we are naturally disappointed that shopping habits post covid have continued to have a detrimental impact on this business.

"We wish the team every success for their future.”

The shop owners at News Today said that the decision was not an easy one to make, but one that was necessary in the current climate.

With "great sadness", they thanked the community for their continued support over the years.

Spinning Gate will now look for a replacement to fill the void left by the convenience store.
