POLICE have named a man from Lowton who has been charged with rape offences. 

Greater Manchester Police were alerted to reports of an attack on a woman in Wigan town centre in the early hours of Saturday, March 12.

Following a short investigation, a 19-year-old man from Lowton was arrested in connection with the attack.

Police have now charged Samuel Jakubowski, of Elm Tree Road, Lowton, with two counts of rape.

On her appointment to Chief Superintendent in September 2021, Emily Higham said that tackling violence against girls is one of her main priorities, with an increased visibility of officers is hoped to reassure women and deter offenders.

An 'Ask Angela' national campaign is in operation to cut down incidents of sexual abuse, where bar staff can discreetly take a person into the back and contact the police if they feel unsafe.

Those convicted of sexual abuse are expected to be strongly punished in the courts.

Jakubowski appeared at Wigan Magistrates Court today (Wednesday, March 15).
