WELL, there’s only one place I can start, even a week on when there has been time for the dust to settle on the amazing weekend for Leigh Leopards.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate everyone associated with the club for the achievement.

Having gained promotion last year, being around the top of the Super League table and in the Challenge Cup Final at this stage of the season would have represented significant success.

But having brought the trophy back to Leigh Sports Village, the season is building to be something remarkable.

We were delighted to play a part in the homecoming for the side on the Sunday and the scenes were incredible.

We thought we had witnessed something amazing last year with the fan parades from the Women’s Euros. But to see 15,000 line the route through the borough to the town hall and then watch on as 15,000 gathered on Civic Square are sights that will live long in the memory.

History has been made and supporters young and old will be able to speak of that weekend for decades to come.

So, well done Adrian Lam, Derek Beaumont, Mike Latham and the whole team and staff – and good luck for the rest of the season; we’re excited to see what’s to come and the possibility of a Warriors v Leopards Grand Final remains in play!

I would also like to pay tribute to the teams from the council who worked so tirelessly in the build-up to the event and on the day itself.

Huge occasions like that don’t come together by accident and it was a tremendous effort from those involved, thank you all.

Continuing along the sporting theme, I’m sure everyone shared the heartbreak for the Lionesses and the borough’s Ella Toone on Sunday.

Reaching the World Cup final, backing up their triumph in the Euros, is an achievement in itself and we are all very proud. The squad has so much potential and is doing a tremendous job of inspiring the next generation.

n An upcoming date for the diary is Proms in the Park, which is coming to Pennington Hall Park on Saturday, September 9.

It’s a great event featuring Tyldesley Brass Band, plenty of flag waving and fireworks, from 7.45pm to 10pm.
