LEIGH Rotary Club raised an incredible figure through its dedicated Santa sleigh and festive events this Christmastime.

All year round, the local Rotary Club Community gets involved in numerous fundraising and community events to distribute funds to local causes and organisations.

With the club organising Santa sleigh events around Leigh and Lowton, these are often the most popular events of the year for families, and they helped to raise a huge £14,880 through donations over the festive period.

The huge festive sum adds to the £30,000 that the club had already donated to local causes over the past year, highlighting their vital presence in the community and especially during the cost of living crisis.

Rotary Club President Frank Bowker said “We can hardly believe the incredible generosity of the local community who contributed a record amount, despite the poor economic climate.

"Many children saved their change through the year and we were given several bags full of coins, whilst others stopped their cars to hand over notes.

"Big thanks go to our amazing helpers, who battled through rain and cold and so did the thousands of children and adults who came out to meet Santa and have their photographs taken.

”Whilst our aim is to bring joy to children and parents at Christmas, the funds we collected will be well spent on local organisations and worthy causes.

"During the past year we donated around £30,000, particularly supporting young and old people, sports clubs, young carers and organisations who help the needy and disadvantaged.

"Leigh Rotary members would like to thank Bents, Asda, and Tesco for allowing collections and also thanks to Waterfields Bakery for storing our Sleigh – but most of all, thanks to the wonderful people of Leigh & Lowton.”
