RESIDENTS across the borough will be able to smash their daily step counts this summer as the 'Big Wigan Walk Week' returns for a second year.

More than 40 organised walks will take place across nine days from Saturday, May 25 to Sunday, June 2.

The first steps will be taken at Pennington Flash with a series of strolls taking place as part of the Flashes Festival of Nature Event (25-26 May), while other highlights include a canal history walk setting off from Trencherfield Mill and a ‘Mint Ball Trail’ celebrating one of Wigan’s most famous exports – the world-renowned Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls.

Residents are being encouraged to step up, put their best foot forward and make the pledge to join in the fun.

Councillor Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “Our Big Wigan Walk Week is about encouraging more and more people to get outside, get some fresh air, achieve their daily step count and enjoy our brilliant borough!

“There are so many benefits to walking, from the positive effects on our physical health to the way it makes us feel. It’s a simple and effective way to keep yourself fit, relieve stress and boost your mental wellbeing.

“We’re lucky to live in one of the greenest urban boroughs in the country and many of our walks will be exploring our glorious green spaces, from major visitor spots such as Pennington Flash and Haigh Woodland Park to our many canal paths and local parks. There’ll also be an opportunity to learn about the rich industrial heritage of our towns.

“Whether you’re a regular walker or taking your first steps to becoming more active, the Big Wigan Walk Week has something for everyone! For families it will also be a fun, free way of keeping the kids active over half term, so make sure to sign up for a walk near you.”

The Big Wigan Walk Week is organised by Be Well, the council’s growing health and wellbeing movement.

Many of the walks will last between 30 minutes and an hour, although some will present more of a challenge – including the eight-mile Wigan Way walk on the final day of the festival.

There will also be Nordic Walking for both beginners and the more experienced, nature walks in collaboration with Lancashire Wildlife Trust, Bump and Buggy events and a special walk suitable for those from assisted living communities or who receive care at home.

Everyone who takes part will be able to pick up a special souvenir badge as a memento.
