How many men does it take to change a lightbulb?
Well. if this photo from 1958 is anything to go by the answer is two - although you did have to take your life in your hands to do it.
This wonderful image shows the street lighting maintenance crew working at the junction of Chorley New Road and Alexandra Road in Horwich.
Seemingly unconcerned about the traffic, they had simply pushed their portable steps into the middle of the road to deal with the light. Can’t see that being allowed today can you?
It’s interesting to note that virtually all the building you can see on this photo subsequently disappeared.
On the left was Southern Terrace which was demolished to make way for a roundabout and the shops on the right were also taken down.
