RESIDENTS across the borough will be joining in the national celebrations of the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day later this year.

On May 10, a special military-themed event will be held in Mesnes Park to honour this milestone.

Residents are also encouraged to host their own community events during the bank holiday weekend.

Neighbourhood groups should promptly submit their requests for street closures to accommodate their celebrations.

VE Day, which falls on May 8, will see a nationwide programme of events.

Victory over Japan (VJ) Day will also be commemorated in August.

Councillor David Molyneux MBE, leader of Wigan Council, said: "We’re proud supporters of our Armed Forces community here in Wigan borough and these milestone dates are important for residents of all ages.

"Our flagship event and the street parties in the community will perfectly complement everything going on across the UK.

"VE and VJ Day were momentous events in the history of our nation that will never be forgotten, and we must preserve the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of lasting peace."

The Mesnes Park event, scheduled from 11am to 4pm, will feature musical performances including those from The Combined Bands of the Lancashire Artillery and Duke of Lancaster Regiments.

In addition to the music, there will be a funfair, artisan market, a display of military vehicles, and refreshments.

For those planning street parties, the deadline for road closure applications is March 30.

The council has waived the requirement for public liability insurance for street parties on this occasion.

However, if activities such as bouncy castles or barbecues could pose a potential risk of injury, public liability insurance is recommended.

Further information about national VE and VJ Day celebrations and resources is available on the council's website.
