THREE recycling centres are preparing for the annual Christmas rush.
Wigan Council and its recycling partner FCC Environment are advising residents to plan ahead to avoid delays and help keep operations running smoothly during the busy festive period.
Between January and June 2025, a record 279,000 vehicles passed through the borough’s recycling centres, more than ever before, rivalling the COVID surge.
A spokesperson for FCC Environment urged residents to plan ahead.
Winter opening hours are 9am till 5.45pm, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, when they will be closed.
The spokesperson said: "Early mornings are usually quieter — think of it as avoiding the Christmas Eve rush."
The borough's three centres are located at Kirkless in Higher Ince, Slag Lane in Leigh, and Chanters in Atherton.
Residents are encouraged to sort waste before arriving and keep electricals, textiles, metals, and cardboard separate to speed up the process.
Mixed waste should not be bagged, and items should be separated to help staff recycle materials efficiently.
Food waste should be placed in green wheelie bins at home and not brought to the centres.
Hidden batteries remain a key concern, as they can cause fires if crushed in the waste stream.
The spokesperson said: "Bring vapes, power tools, and gadgets separately in a safe container.
"Remember lithium-ion danger: laptops, phones, scooters, and e-cigarettes are especially risky if tossed in the wrong skip."
Residents are reminded that careful planning, sorting, and safe battery disposal will help ensure the centres remain efficient and safe during the holiday season.
