A PRIMARY school in Golborne was forced to close today, saying it was "unsafe to open".

St Thomas' C of E Infant and Primary School in Golborne remains closed today due to a heating failure.

With an amber weather warning for snow and ice in place across the North West, temperatures in Golborne are between 1 and -2 degrees today, dropping to -3 overnight.

A post to the school's Facebook page, announcing the temporary closure, reads: "Due to a heating failure we cannot open today. The temperatures in school are way below the legal working temperature. It is not safe to be open.

"Further information will be sent regarding tomorrow when we know what’s happening."
