AFTER snow and low temperatures over the past week, Cold Weather Payments have been triggered in Leigh and Atherton.

Those eligible for the payments can claim a payment if the average temperature in the area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over 7 consecutive days, with Leigh and Atherton now falling into that criteria.

In an online post, Jo Platt, MP for Leigh and Atherton, said: "With the past week bringing extremely cold temperatures, Cold Weather Payments have been triggered in Leigh and Atherton to help with extra heating and energy costs.

"You could receive a £25 Cold Weather Payment if you live in M29, M46, WA12, WA3, WN2, WN4, WN7 and receive certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest.

"Stay warm and please do make sure you’re getting the support you’re entitled to."

She has today, told the Journal: "I know this can be a particularly challenging time of year financially for many households, and this support is available to assist with the increase of additional heating and energy costs.

"I would urge anyone who thinks they may qualify to check they are receiving the support they’re entitled to. And if you’re struggling to heat your home this winter but don’t meet the eligibility criteria, please do get in touch so we can look at what other support may be available.”

You may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Universal Credit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest

Those eligible for payments, should be paid automatically over the next 14 days.
