LEIGH has been put forward for the Government's Town of Culture competition in the hopes of delivering a "bold cultural programme" across the borough.
In a post to social media, MP for Leigh and Atherton, Jo Platt said: "I’m proud to have put Leigh forward for the Government’s Town of Culture competition.
"From our rich industrial heritage to our sporting success, creativity and strong sense of community, this town deserves to be seen and celebrated.
"Winning would allow us to deliver a bold cultural programme, with investment that brings change by supporting local people, communities and talent.
"This opportunity would also benefit our neighbouring towns - Atherton, Tyldesley, Lowton and Golborne- helping to strengthen culture across the whole constituency."
The Town of Culture competition was announced by Culture Secretary and Wigan MP, Lisa Nandy in October 2025, and provides a platform for communities across the country to tell their own unique story and shine a spotlight on the vital role towns play in our national life.
Three finalists - one small, one medium, one large town - will be chosen. The winner will be crowned UK Town of Culture 2028 and receive a £3 million prize.
The two runners-up will each receive £250,000 to deliver elements of their bid, from refreshed community infrastructure to electric music festivals.
The winner will deliver a vibrant cultural programme, showcasing towns’ local visions and voices through new arts venues, performances, workshops and more. This competition is set to bring local investment, creates a lasting sense of pride in towns, and opens doors to the arts for everyone.

In an online video, MP Jo Platt added: "As we know, Leigh is rich in cultural vibrancy and creativity, and as a former mining town, Leigh didn't just help power the nation, it helped shape its story.
"Culture isn't only found in big cities, she continued. "In Leigh it lives on the touchline of grassroots sports pitches, in local creative spaces and in the strength of our community spirit.
"Our town deserves to be seen, recognised and celebrated, and winning would allow us to deliver a bold cultural programme."
The deadline for towns to enter the national competition is set for 31 March 2026, with the shortlist of towns expected to be announced in the Spring.
