LEIGH is set for a mild but wet and breezy weekend, with persistent spells of rain at times.

Starting with Friday, heavy rain is expected early on, with temperatures reaching a maximum of about 11°C and a low of approximately 8°C.

The chance of rain exceeds 95 per cent between 8am and 9am, decreasing to between 30 and 50 per cent throughout the afternoon and evening.

Winds will generally come from the south, strengthening from about 8 to 10 mph at the break of day to 17 to 19 mph as the day progresses, with gusts reaching up to 37 mph.

Turning to Saturday, the conditions will be slightly milder but also cloudier with sporadic light rain.

Temperatures will peak around 12°C and drop to around 9°C.

The morning, from 6am to midday, will witness temperatures hovering near 10 to 11°C, with rain chances increasing from 20 to 40 per cent early, to 70 to 90 per cent by late morning and into midday, making prolonged showers likely in the middle of the day.

Through the afternoon and evening, the probability of rain remains high, hovering between 40 to 70 per cent between 3pm and 11pm.

Temperatures will remain stable around 11 to 12°C.

The wind will continue blowing from a southerly direction at around 11 to 12 mph, with gusts possibly reaching up to 27 mph.

On to Sunday, the forecast indicates predominantly cloudy skies with occasional rain, similar to Saturday, with peak temperatures near 12°C, dropping to about 7°C overnight.

During the early morning hours, there's a small chance of showers (approximately 20 to 30 per cent) with predominantly dry and cloudy conditions, and temperatures steady around 10 to 11°C.

As the day progresses, the risk of rain increases again from mid-afternoon, rising to about 50 to 60 per cent by 3pm to 5pm and staying around the same percentage into the evening.

Light rain or drizzle can be expected at times, along with a fresh southerly breeze around 12 to 13 mph.

No risk of ice is signalled, as temperatures remain several degrees above freezing, yet the breeze might make it feel cooler with Met Office 'feels like' values around 8 to 9°C.

The optimal time for outdoor activities appears to be on Sunday morning or early into the afternoon, before the showers become more frequent.

Saturday looks drearier for an extended period, especially during the late morning and early afternoon.

As a result of repeated showers on already sodden ground, coupled with gusts in the 25 to 37 mph range, there could be some surface water on roads and blustery conditions on exposed routes.
