A bus was evacuated on Monday evening after the engine started “smoking” and giving off a smell that drove some passengers off.

The 582 service to Leigh set off from Bolton at 6.10pm on March 2 but was evacuated in Atherton at the Bolton Road stop before Asda.

In a video, passengers can be seen standing beside a Bee Network bus which has stopped with its hazard lights on.

One passenger said the bus “absolutely stunk” and he had to get off a stop earlier because he “couldn’t stand the smell anymore”.

A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester said that a “vehicle fault” was noticed by the driver during the journey.

They said: “The driver of a 582 service this evening identified a vehicle fault while in service.

“Passengers were asked to leave the bus so that it could be recovered and then later returned to the depot.”
