Gibfield Preservation Group joined this year’s Atherton Carnival, where volunteers raised funds and awareness for their campaign to protect one of Atherton’s last remaining green spaces from proposed development.
The group’s stand attracted a steady flow of visitors throughout the day, with many residents stopping by to learn more about the plans and show their support.
Volunteers highlighted the potential impact the proposed building would have on wildlife and the importance of preserving Gibfield’s green space for the community and future generations.
Amanda Coleman, chair of Gibfield Preservation Group, said: "We were thrilled to be part of such a fantastic community event.
"The level of support we received was incredibly encouraging.
"It’s clear that people care deeply about protecting our green spaces and want to preserve it for the wildlife and future generations.
"We continue to appeal to developers and the council to rethink these plans."
Funds raised on the day will go toward supporting the group’s ongoing campaign work.
Councillors and Leigh MP Jo Platt also visited the stand, offering their backing.
The Gibfield Preservation Group has objected to plans by Peel Land Group to build warehouses and houses on the Gibfield Park site, arguing it would cause a loss of habitats and harm to protected species.
The Greater Manchester Places for Everyone report stated that if the development went ahead, "habitats and features of the natural environment will be lost, including ponds or will be otherwise affected with adverse consequences for protected species and other wildlife".
The group expressed its thanks to carnival organisers and everyone who visited the stand, donated, or offered encouragement.
In a post on Facebook, the group said: "Thanks to the amazing team of helpers today.
"It was an amazing day.
"Lots of good conversations and support for our work.
"And some money to help us as we move forward with the next stage and what we may need.
"Huge thanks to Debi, Helen, David, Claire, Jade, Dennis and Diane and not forgetting Ted the dog."
