A HISTORIC landmark is reopening with a new lease of life.

Haigh Woodland Park’s Plantation Gates and Lodges have been transformed into a visitor centre and an art installation after a major restoration.

The newly renovated buildings will be unveiled at a launch event.

Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “I can’t wait to see residents enjoying the Lodges for the first time.

"Everyone knows the Gates and Lodges and have wanted to get inside, now is your chance!

“The artwork is looking great, the immersive experience brings something new to Haigh and the borough, developed in partnership with former residents of the lodges, visitors, staff and volunteers at Haigh Woodland Park, Royal Albert Edward Infimary and young people from Wigan Youth Zone.”

The event takes place on Saturday, July 4, with the centrepiece being an immersive eight-minute visual experience in the North Lodge.

Developed by regional artists Leo Mercer and James Hooton, the installation combines storytelling, music, and light to bring the site’s history to life.

The project involved workshops with community members, including former lodge residents, hospital staff, youth groups, and park volunteers.

Attendees were invited to draw favourite parts of Haigh, with their artwork woven into the final experience.

Councillor Ready said: “The aim of these workshops was to really bring the story of Haigh to life, for people of all ages to have input into artwork that we hope will be seen lots of visitors.”

Entitled 'What the Walls Remember', the installation explores the lodges’ past, the surrounding woodland, and the park’s ongoing evolution.

The Grade II* listed buildings have undergone extensive repairs and restoration since work began last year.

Updates include new Burlington Blue slates on the roofs, reinstated original chimneys, and a roof light in the North Lodge to increase natural illumination.

Stonework has been repaired, and mortar replaced, with new sash windows installed to match the original style.

A gentle exterior stone clean has refreshed the lodges and archway.

The gates and railings have also been sent off-site to be shot blasted, repaired and redecorated.

Visitors will be able to access the lodges free of charge during standard opening hours—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10am to 2pm.

Bookings are required for the opening weekend and can be made via the Haigh Woodland Park website or social media channels.
