A FORMER children's television producer has released his second book in a comedic children’s series.

Chris McGuire, who grew up in Tyldesley and attended Holy Family and St Mary’s schools, is now a full-time author and hopes to inspire children to rediscover the joy of reading through his stories.

His latest release, Crooks and Nannies Too, is aimed at readers aged six to nine and continues the adventures of a secret organisation of unconventional nannies who battle the world’s worst villains.

Mr McGuire said: "The first book set the world up, but this one lets me really run with it.

"It’s bigger, sillier and probably even more ridiculous."

The series draws on his experiences as a father and his background in children’s television, where he worked on shows for Disney, Nickelodeon, and CBBC.

Mr McGuire said: "I spend a lot of time trying to entertain my kids at home anyway.

"Writing just feels like an extension of that.

"If I can make my own children laugh, I figure other families might enjoy it too."

He is keenly aware of the challenges facing children’s reading habits today.

Mr McGuire said: "That’s something I think about a lot.

"Kids have so many distractions now, so if a book can genuinely make them laugh and pull them in, then that’s a win.

"I’m not trying to compete with screens.

"I just want to make reading feel fun."

Keren Williams, head of marketing at Candy Jar Books, said the publisher remains committed to producing energetic and accessible fiction.

Ms Williams said: "The great thing about Crooks and Nannies Too is that it absolutely works as a standalone story, so new readers can jump straight in without having read the first book.

"At Candy Jar we're actively trying to produce books that are fun, a bit silly, and most importantly get children reading and enjoying stories again."

Mr McGuire is also the author of official books based on the classic Canadian animated series The Raccoons.

Crooks and Nannies Too is available at bookshops across the UK.
