A SITE manager has won a national industry award for excellence in housebuilding.

Gary Atherton, from Atherton, was recognised for his work at David Wilson Homes’ Calder Rise development in Cottam, Preston, taking home his sixth Pride in the Job award from the National House Building Council (NHBC).

Mr Atherton, who has worked with the company for 25 years, was promoted to assistant site manager in 2007 before becoming site manager in 2011.

Mr Atherton said: "Every win is a great achievement and it makes all the effort worthwhile.

"The award may have my name on it, but it is a reflection of the whole site team.

"It’s a team game, and that includes my assistants, all the trades and labourers on site, contractors and suppliers."

He said: "Calder Rise is a special site.

"It has lots of green open space and wildlife areas including ponds.

"It really sells itself."

Mr Atherton works alongside his daughter Danielle, one of his assistant site managers, who joined the team as a trainee seven years ago.

He said: "We work really well together.

"She is super organised and that helps me no end.

"She enjoys her job, and I can see her doing really well in the future."

Mr Atherton said he enjoys the variety that comes with the role.

He said: "Despite working towards the same end goal of delivering high-quality homes, every day presents new challenges and opportunities."

This year, Barratt Redrow site managers won 122 Pride in the Job awards, the highest number for any UK housebuilder for the 22nd consecutive year.

The awards are widely regarded as the 'Oscars' of the housebuilding industry, with judging based on consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise, and health and safety.

Claire Jarvis, managing director for David Wilson Homes North West, said: "These awards demonstrate our long-term commitment to looking after our customers and building high-quality homes.

"Anyone who buys a home from a site with a Pride in the Job award winner knows their home has been built to the highest standard."
