SEVEN parks and green spaces across the borough have once again been recognised among the best in the country after retaining prestigious Green Flag status.

Among those highlighted are Pennington Hall Park in Leigh and Central Park in Atherton, with the awards recognising the quality, management, and community value of parks and green spaces across the UK.

The Green Flag Award is the international benchmark for well-managed parks and green spaces and is administered by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

This year, a record 2,391 sites across the UK received recognition.

Wigan Council said the awards reflect the hard work of parks staff, volunteers, and community groups who help maintain the borough's green spaces.

Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: "We take great pride in our parks and green spaces here in Wigan Borough, so we’re delighted to see that hard work and passion has been recognised once again!

"Our parks are so important to our communities.

"As places to relax, socialise, and be active, they can have a major positive impact on our health and wellbeing.

"Achieving Green Flag status for another 12 months is just reward and goes to show that the love and passion we all have for our borough doesn’t go unnoticed."

The borough's Green Flag winners:

Pennington Hall Park has been a focal point for the community for more than a century after being gifted to the former Leigh Corporation in 1920.

The popular park features children's play areas, tennis courts, bowling greens, and a traditional bandstand, while community events are held throughout the year.

Community Spaces CIC also runs initiatives including the Caffeina café and wellbeing projects from the site.

Central Park, Atherton

Central Park remains one of Atherton's most important community green spaces.

The park offers open recreational space and facilities used by families, walkers, and sports groups.

It made history by becoming Atherton's first Green Flag-recognised green space and has retained that high standard once again.

Colliers Corner, Howe Bridge

Community spirit is at the heart of Colliers Corner, which is maintained by The Bridgers community group.

The site received a Green Flag Community Award, recognising the efforts of volunteers in creating and maintaining a welcoming green space for residents.

Mesnes Park, Wigan

One of the borough's best-known Victorian parks, Mesnes Park has long been recognised for its heritage features, landscaping, and role as a destination for visitors and residents alike.

It again secured Green Flag status this year.

Alexandra Park, Newtown

Alexandra Park retained its place on the prestigious list thanks to its well-maintained grounds and importance as a community green space serving local residents.

Jubilee Park, Ashton-in-Makerfield

A popular family destination, Jubilee Park once again met the standards required for Green Flag recognition, reflecting its quality facilities and upkeep.

Tanners Lane Embankment, Golborne

Maintained by volunteers from Golborne in Bloom, Tanners Lane Embankment earned another Green Flag Community Award, highlighting the contribution made by local people in caring for the site.
