A LAND train service is set to return.

The long-awaited relaunch of the land train at Haigh Woodland Park in Wigan will begin this summer, with regular routes running throughout the summer holidays between the courtyard and Plantation Gates.

A favourite feature of the estate, the train has delighted families and remains accessible to all, including dogs.

Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: "The return of the land train at Haigh Hall is something very close to my heart.

"As a young lad, I used the train regularly, and I am proud to say that I still live within walking distance of the Hall today.

"This is something residents have been looking forward to for decades, and I know how much it means to so many people across our borough.

"I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to help deliver this for our residents.

"Haigh Hall is Wigan Borough's jewel in the crown, and the land train will once again help families, older residents, and visitors of all ages to enjoy everything this wonderful destination has to offer."

Two trains will operate from 10.30am, with the final departure around 3pm.

Each journey will take around 20 minutes one way.

No prior booking is required, and tickets can be purchased from the driver using cash or card.

The relaunch comes as part of a wider multi-million-pound restoration of Haigh Hall and its surrounding woodland park, funded by Wigan Council, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and Levelling Up Funding.

Current works include the transformation of Bothy Yard into an outdoor event and volunteer space.

Earlier this year, planning permission was granted to redevelop Haigh Hall into vast gallery space, an education hub, café, restaurant, flexible events space, and rooftop bar.

In September 2024, Wigan Council announced an investment of £380,000 for the return of the woodland railway, which has been closed since 2020.

Expected to reopen this year, the 1.6km railway, which first opened in 1986, winds through the upper woodland and serves two stations.

More details on the Haigh Hall transformation are available via the Haigh Hall Instagram account and Wigan Council's website.
