SHOPS in Atherton could benefit from a significant facelift under proposals being considered as part of a £500,000 funding package secured for the town.

Earlier this year, Atherton was awarded £500,000 through the Pride in Place Impact programme, which is aimed at delivering visible improvements to local communities and strengthening social infrastructure.

Wigan Council has revealed that around half of the funding has been earmarked for town centre regeneration, with one proposal being to launch a grant scheme that would help businesses improve the appearance and quality of their shop fronts.

The scheme would follow similar projects carried out elsewhere in the borough, including in Tyldesley, Leigh, and Ashton-in-Makerfield, where investment has been used to enhance the look of town centre properties.

The remaining funding is expected to be directed towards supporting local community organisations, sports groups, and improvements to play provision in Atherton.

Council leaders are now seeking feedback from businesses and residents before final decisions are made on how the money should be spent.

In a post on social media, Wigan Council said: "One idea has been to improve the quality and appearance of businesses in Atherton via a grant scheme, following similar projects that have revamped shop fronts in Tyldesley, Leigh, and Ashton-in-Makerfield."

Businesses are being encouraged to take part in a survey which will help shape the plans and could ultimately determine which projects receive funding.

The consultation is open until August 16.

Residents and business owners can share their views through the council's online survey.
