SIR Ian McKellen has sent a message of support to Wigan ahead of this weekend's Wigan Pride celebrations.
The acclaimed actor, who attended Wigan Grammar School as a child, recorded a video message reflecting on his memories of the town and explaining why Pride events remain important.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's event, Sir Ian said: "When I first went to Wigan Grammar School in 1951, I had to learn the school song:

"'Oh, Wigan is a grand old town... the Romans knew it well... it always had its good king coal... as long as folks can tell.'"
Reflecting on how the town has changed since then, he added: "Well, coal no more in Wigan, and no more grammar school either.
"Things have changed."
Sir Ian also reminisced about spending his pocket money on Uncle Joe's Mint Balls as a schoolboy.
But the actor said one of the biggest changes has been the emergence of Pride events.
"No Pride in Wigan when I was a kid.
"Not in the sense that we celebrate it today," he said.
"I just wanted to send my love and I wish I could be with you, because it's an important event.
"Gay people can just walk the streets, proud to be themselves, proud to say that they're gay, and they can be supported by their allies and friends, and family, and neighbours."
He added: "Wigan can feel better about itself."
The Lord of the Rings and X-Men star concluded his message with the phrase: "Some people are gay.
"Get over it."
Wigan Pride was created following a visit by Sir Ian to the town 12 years ago, and the actor also attended the event in 2017.

The 2026 event takes place on Saturday, August 8, beginning with a parade from Crawford Street at 11am before celebrations move through Mesnes Park before returning to Believe Square.
A free programme of entertainment will take place throughout the day, with Booty Luv and Big Brovaz among the headline acts.
Council leaders have also issued a joint statement backing the event, describing Pride as "a celebration of love, visibility, unity, and inclusion" and encouraging residents to get involved.
