THE new civic square in Leigh is set to be officially unveiled this weekend following a programme of improvements.

Described by Wigan council as a central part of Leigh’s regeneration project, the new-look square has been designed to "create a welcoming and vibrant destination in the heart of the town centre".

Work has been completed on new paving, seating, improved landscaping and lighting and public realm features.

The council said that currently ‘finishing touches are still being completed’.
A poem by poet Louise Fazackerley, created in collaboration with Leigh Young Writers, will be engraved into the new paving.

Civic award ‘Believe Stars’ will be refreshed and reinstalled, including a new star for the town’s successful indie rock band The Lottery Winners.

It said the space aims to build on a programme of successful events hosted in recent years, ‘ensuring that the square continues to serve as an attractive space for people to meet, relax, and enjoy a range of community events’.

The authority said community events will take place at Leigh civic square over the coming months.

The refreshed public space will officially open to the public on Saturday, September 12.

The square revamp is part of a long-term £32 million investment programme in the town centre.

Other projects include the refurbishment of Leigh Market and high street shop fronts scheme.

Other town investment over the next 10 years, funded by a Pride In Place award, will be overseen by the independently chaired Leigh Neighbourhood Board.

The board has set priorities including setting the town centre on a prosperous footing and tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.
