A NOSTALGIC land train is offering free rides to mark its official launch.

Visitors to Haigh Woodland Park can hop on board the popular attraction in Wigan on Friday, September 11, which has already carried more than 5,000 passengers since returning in July.

Councillor Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: "We’ve had such positive feedback from the land train so far, from residents who remember the original land train as well as the younger generations enjoying it for the first time.

"I was first on the train 50 years ago and it’s really close to my heart, so to see the reaction from the public has been tremendous.

"We hope the open day on Friday, September 11 will encourage even more visitors on the train and to the park."

The land train operates from the turning circle near the visitor centre to Plantation Gates and back again.

Passengers can disembark at Plantation Gates to explore refurbished Grade II* listed buildings and the immersive experience in the North Lodge.

The attraction is open to all ages and well-behaved dogs.

Free rides begin at 11am on Friday.

Booking is required and can be made through Eventbrite at HaighLandTrain.eventbrite.co.uk.

Haigh Hall and the surrounding woodland park are currently undergoing a multi-million-pound restoration funded by Wigan Council, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and Levelling Up Funding.

Work is underway at Bothy Yard, which is being redeveloped into an outdoor event and volunteer space.

Plans for Haigh Hall include gallery and education spaces, a café, restaurant, flexible events areas, and a rooftop bar.

Planning permission for the transformation was approved earlier this year.

More details about the restoration can be found on the Wigan Council website and the Haigh Hall Instagram page.
