AN MP has backed a petition to install a new crossing on a ‘dangerous’ roundabout where pedestrians ‘take lives into their own hands’.
Leigh and Atherton MP Jo Platt previously visited Greyhound Roundabout, on the A580 East Lancashire Road near Glazebury, as part of a campaign to highlight the dangers of the current lack of a safe crossing.
She has encouraged residents to share and sign the petition, which seeks to ‘demonstrate the strength of feeling across our community’ about boosting safety at the crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
It was started by the MP last month and currently has more than 650 signatures.
Ms Platt said that she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the response to her previous comments showing the difficulties of crossing the roundabout.
She was joined at the roundabout junction by residents who shared their experiences of trying to navigate the roundabout.
One constituent said it once took her nearly half an hour to cross the roundabout on her way to school.
Another said: “I would love to be able to make my way to Bents, where I could free run my guide dog along with other dogs and guide dog owners and have a coffee afterwards.
“Our route would take us across this island. Unfortunately, I simply cannot do that.”

The MP said she is going to ‘keep pushing’ to see what measures can be put in place there.
The petition’s description states: “For too long, Greyhound Roundabout has been a significant barrier to safe and accessible travel for pedestrians and cyclists.
“The volume of traffic, speed of vehicles, and absence of a suitable crossing point mean that crossing the road presents a genuine safety risk.
“I have been contacted by residents from across our community – including schoolchildren, disabled residents, cyclists, elderly residents, and many others – who have shared serious concerns about the challenges they face when trying to cross safely.
“The current situation effectively cuts people off from destinations, including Bents Garden Centre, nearby businesses, and neighbouring communities.
“For many residents, this restricts their ability to travel independently, access essential services, and participate fully in community life.
“A safe pedestrian crossing would improve road safety, reconnect communities, and support local businesses, while making active travel a realistic and accessible option for more residents.
“I strongly support the campaign for a safe crossing at Greyhound Roundabout and will continue to press the relevant authorities to take action.”
