TWO men in their 30s have been arrested over a suspected terrorist plot targeting the Jewish community in the Manchester area, police said.

The men were arrested on Sunday, September 20, on Newton Street in Manchester as part of what police described as a “long-running proactive investigation”.

They were taken to a London police station and remain in custody, the Metropolitan Police said.

The arrests came as Yom Kippur - the holiest day in the Jewish calendar - began at sundown on Sunday.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, senior national co-ordinator for counter-terrorism policing (CTP), said the investigation had led to the disruption of what police believe was a plot to target Jewish people in the Manchester area.

She added that police were aware the arrests would cause “further concern” among the Jewish community and the wider public, particularly during the High Holy Day period.

DAC Evans said counter-terrorism officers were working closely with Greater Manchester Police and other partners to ensure people were kept safe.

She said: “And more broadly, across the country CTP is working with local police forces to provide protective security support and advice for areas with Jewish communities, and particularly during the High Holy Day period.”
