A PARK is celebrating an increase in volunteers, with five times more people now helping out.
Haigh Woodland Park recorded a rise from 15 volunteers in April 2025 to 77 in July 2026.
These volunteers have been enhancing visitor experiences, supporting conservation work, and helping run events and activities.
Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods at Wigan Council, said: "Our volunteers are at the heart of the success at Haigh, and their invaluable support has helped the site welcome record visitor numbers during a particularly busy summer season.
"In the three months from April-July 2026, they gave nearly 6,000 hours of their time, supporting visitors, events and activities and working across this amazing site.
"Haigh thrives because of its volunteer community, and I would like to thank every volunteer, visitor, partner, and supporter who has been on this journey with us so far."
Recently, Haigh hosted its annual volunteer event with 50 people representing the wide range of volunteer teams across the site.
This annual celebration brought together volunteers and teams at Haigh to celebrate their work, say thank you for their commitment, and recognise those who have made an exceptional contribution over the past year.
Every volunteer received a certificate and gift in appreciation of their service.
Special awards were also presented to individuals whose dedication has stood out during the year.
There are opportunities to get involved in volunteering at Haigh across several teams, including site support, horticulture, woodland rail, activities and events, visitor services, and more.
Their dedication and community spirit continue to make a significant contribution to Haigh Woodland Park, ensuring it remains a welcoming and valued destination for visitors of all ages.
At Haigh, volunteers are asked to be kind, positive, accountable, and courageous, giving their time, skills, and commitment.
In return, they make a difference, become a part of the community, meet new people, have fun, improve their wellbeing, and gain personal development.
Volunteer teams and opportunities across the site include horticulture, woodland balsam bashing, activities and events, the golf course, site support, the woodland railway project, visitor services, Friends of Haigh Crazy Golf, parkrun, heritage, the Woodland Hub, and Foodie Friday.
