People are being reminded to double-check their waste before heading to the tip.

The Slag Lane and Chanters household waste recycling centres in Leigh and Atherton are operated by FCC Environment.

Residents are being urged to make sure batteries are removed from electrical items, fridge freezers are emptied of food, and cardboard is flattened before disposal.

Louise Atherton, contract monitoring officer at Wigan Council, said: "By flattening cardboard, removing food from fridge freezers, and taking batteries out of electrical items, residents can ensure we can maximise the space and safety of everyone on site."

Improperly disposed batteries are a particular concern, as they pose a serious fire risk.

Tracy Elder, area supervisor for FCC Environment, said: "Many people are unaware where batteries can be hidden in products – if it has a light, makes a noise or moves, it will have a battery.

"Sadly battery-related fires are on the increase so please do take a minute to think about what you’re about to dispose of, before you get to us."

If batteries are left inside items, they must be removed and placed in the designated battery waste container at the recycling centre.

Alternatively, batteries can be taken to other drop-off locations, which can be found by visiting Recycle Now’s Recycling Locator online.

Both the Slag Lane and Chanters sites, along with Kirkless in Ince, accept a wide range of materials, including hazardous waste, paper, glass, and plastics.
