WITH autumn colours taking over the countryside, now is a great time to wrap up warm and head outdoors for a scenic walk.

This 12-mile route from Lymm to Leigh takes walkers through open countryside, along peaceful trails and past waterways, with plenty of views to enjoy as the landscape turns golden.

The journey begins at Lymm Cross before joining the Trans Pennine Trail and heading across the flat Cheshire plain towards Warburton Toll Bridge.

The bridge marks the highest point of the route before the walk continues through open fields and onto the Glazebrook Trail at Cadishead.

This stretch offers wide views across the surrounding countryside, which can be particularly picturesque during the autumn months.

The trail crosses the M62 and the two main Liverpool to Manchester railway lines before following Glaze Brook, which provides a peaceful backdrop and a good spot to pause along the way.

From there, the route continues through Glazebury before crossing the East Lancs Road and heading towards Leigh town centre alongside Pennington Brook and past Christ Church.

The walk is mostly flat, although autumn weather can leave some sections muddy underfoot, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

After completing the 12-mile route, walkers will find plenty of places in Leigh to stop for a well-earned drink or something to eat, including The Waterside near the bus station.

With changing leaves, crisp autumn air and miles of countryside to explore, it is a walk best saved for a dry, clear day when the views can be enjoyed at their best.
