AN illuminated parade is set to light up the streets as part of this year’s Frost Festival.

Returning to Leigh as part of the wider Wigan Council-backed programme of Christmas events, Light Up Leigh will take place on Saturday, November 14, beginning in the town centre from 12pm.

A highlight of the evening will be the community lantern parade, which sets off from Leigh Miners Welfare Institute at 5.15pm and promises a festive spectacle of illuminated lanterns, giant puppets, and mesmerising performers.

Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighbourhoods, said: "We’re proud to be offering such a fantastic programme of family events across the borough to help get everyone in the festive spirit.

"From the legendary pop acts to light parades and trails, music, entertainment, food, and cultural events, there’s something for all the family.

"The cost of living is something we know that lots of people are worried about, especially coming into Christmas, so it’s important to us that many of these events remain free whenever possible for people to attend, and I’d like to thank all the local businesses who have supported these activities.

"Please also take advantage of our free parking offer, we know it makes a difference, and we can all do our bit to support local traders at this important time of year."

Free parking will be available on Wigan Council-owned car parks from November 16.

The offer includes free parking on weekdays from 3pm and all day at weekends until January 1.

The Frost Festival also features the Wigan Christmas lights switch-on, taking place on November 22 in the town centre.

This event will be headlined by 90s pop and dance group D:Ream, best known for their hit Things Can Only Get Better.

The Wigan event will also include live entertainment, music, and the final night of Light Night Wigan, a trail of illuminated installations across Mesnes Park and the town centre.

Tickets are required for entry to the Mesnes Park section of the light trail.

The Wigan event is sponsored by Glow, organisers of the Grand Arcade’s Santa’s Grotto, with bookings for Santa’s Grotto also opening on the day.
