SIX more sporting youngsters have received the Queen's Jubilee Award from Welwyn Hatfield Council.

The awards scheme provides financial support to promising youngsters who show outstanding achievement in the world of the arts and sport and is open to anyone aged between 11 to 21 and in full-time education.

The winners received their awards from the chairman of the council, Councillor Pat Storey, at a presentation on last week.

One of the latest awards was presented to Christian Brailey, 14, who was given £250 for his talent in tennis.

Christian plays tennis at county level in the Under 14 category and trains with other county and national players at Gosling Sports Stadium in Welwyn Garden City.

He has played for the county since the age of eight and this year played at Wimbledon in a national competition. He is currently ranked two in his age group in Hertfordshire.

Christian, a pupil of Dame Alice Owen's School, Potters Bar, intends to use his grant to help with coaching costs and travel and entry fees.

Gregg Roantree, 15, of Verulam School in St Albans received £250 for his prowess in squash.

Gregg has been playing the game for six years and is currently ranked number five in the county in the under 15 group. Gregg also plays badminton at county level and intends to use the grant to help with his coaching costs.

Lynne Pestle, 18, attends Stanborough School in Welwyn Garden City and was given £250 for her work in netball. Lynne currently plays netball at county level and plays in the English Counties League.

She was a member of the under 18 county squad last season and has been selected for this season. She intends to use the grant to help with coaching costs, travelling to competitions and accommodation for away matches.

Twelve-year-old Katriona Herring, who also attends Stanborough School, was awarded £250 for showing outstanding talent at badminton. Katriona joined Swifts junior badminton in 2002 and has progressed quickly. She is now in the senior year and is currently ranked fifth in that squad. Katriona intends to use the grant to assist with squad fees, coaching costs, competition entry and equipment.

Other winners were 13-year-old Ryan Shearer of John Henry Newman School in Stevenage, who got £250 for roller hockey.

Tom Dowie, 14, of Sir Frederic Osborn School, Welwyn Garden City, and also got £250 for his talent in mountain biking.
