POLICE are warning elderly residents to be wary after a burglar broke into the home of a 90-year-old woman.

The woman was not in her warden-controlled accommodation when a man climbed in through an open window and carried out a search of her home.

He fled empty-handed after being disturbed by a member of staff. The incident took place between 10.15am and 11.15am on Wednesday, June 1.

A neighbour reported seeing a strange man who claimed to be selling items from door to door. He was seen approaching the victim's home and is described as white, in his early 20s, slim with dark short hair. He was around 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins.

Police are now urging elderly homeowners to be wary of anyone calling at the door and have issued the following advice: l Remember to use a door chain if you have one and always ask to see an identity card of a caller. If you are in any doubt that they are not there for genuine reasons, keep them out and remember, never buy or sell on your doorstep.

l If you go out make sure that all ground floor windows and doors are shut securely no matter how hot it is. If you have window locks make sure you use them.

l Even if you are in the back garden shut all windows and lock all doors.

l When answering the door, place the door chain on. Always ask to see the caller's identity card and check it carefully, closing the door while you do so. If they are genuine, they won't mind waiting. If the caller claims to be from a company or utility firm, get the number from the directory and call to confirm. You could also ring a neighbour or relative you would like to be present. Remember, if in doubt keep them out.
