REGULAR readers are determined to save Golborne Library from closure.

Members of the newly-formed Golborne Library Action Group say the community has been particularly badly hit by economic woes.

Group spokesman Ian Massey told the Journal: "The library has become the cohesive force which binds the community together. We feel strongly that Golborne Library should be saved as it is the hub of a dying community. If we lose this valuable resource the knock on effects could be enormous."

Library users appreciate the varied events staged there such as: regular story time for toddlers, cross stitch group, activity sessions for pre-school children, internet access, courses for the unemployed and a well-attended monthly book group.

Mr Massey fears for the future if the library falls foul of Council spending cuts: "There are no social areas in Golborne town centre. There are no cafes or coffee shops, in fact very few shops of any kind except hairdressers, estate agents and betting shops.

"These things need to be considered. In a town like Golborne this is not just a library it is a social necessity."
