WIDNES Vikings have signed Adam Tangata on a two-year deal.

Tangata joins the Vikings from Betfred Championship side Halifax RLFC for the start of the 2019 season.

The 27-year old, who can play at either prop forward or second row, has almost 100 appearances in England with the Championship side, scoring 26 tries.

Adam started his career at Canberra Raiders, going on to play for the Raiders’ feeder team, Mount Pritchard Mounties before making the move to Yorkshire for the 2015 season.

The forward instantly became a fan favourite with the supporters at the MBi Shay Stadium for his work rate and efforts in defence, whilst also displaying his ability to produce strong carries and his capability to offload in the tackle.

Tangata also carries international experience, having represented his native Cook Islands at the Rugby League World Cup in 2013.

Adam’s move to the Vikings is subject to visa approval and the club looks forward to welcoming him for pre-season training.

Tangata said: “I’m excited to sign, and it's a great opportunity for me to come and play for Widnes.

"This is a club that is family-orientated and is ready made to rebuild and progress.

“To be in this environment, in a full-time capacity, is something I can’t wait to start and I’m looking forward to getting pre-season underway.

“For myself personally, I needed a new challenge in my career and I am truly grateful for this opportunity.

“I think of myself to be a physical defender and a strong carrier of the ball but most of all, I’m a big believer in teamwork. Everything I do on the field is for the team around me and the people involved with this club. I will always aim to give my all and put my best foot forward for the supporters who come to watch us every week.

“Having spoken with James Rule and then hearing that the club is placed at the heart of the community, I was delighted. That is where I think every club should be. Whilst I was at Halifax, I was big on making an impact both on and off the field and being a part of the community, so I want to continue doing the same here.

“I’m a proud person, and for someone who has come from where I have, I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to be playing for a club like Widnes.”

James Rule, CEO of Widnes Vikings, said: “Adam is a quality player that we have admired for some time, and indeed attempted to sign in the past.

“He will add real quality to our pack but will also to our wider club culture. I’ve been impressed talking to Adam to hear the passion he has to contribute not just on the field but also in supporting our community engagement and making a difference to the lives of people within our town and surrounding areas.”
