LEIGH Miners Rangers have held their awards event.

The first team achieved instant promotion back to the Premier Division of the NCL, while the under 18s and women’s teams both contested finals in their respective competitions.

In the wider context the club also celebrated the continuing development of girls’ rugby with a third youngsters’ team being established for 2019 and also thanked outgoing committee members Mick Fairhurst, retiring as chairman, Mina Patel and Dave Muir.

Three men were also inducted into the club's Hall of Fame, as 1970s/80s star loose-forward Jimmy Reynolds, 1990s scrum-half Mick Devine and 1990s/2000s Grand Final winning and BARLA captain Tommy Goulden were named on the roll of honour.

A fine under 18s season - which saw them finish league and National Cup runners-up - saw Louis Brogan claim both the JRs @ Avacab Player of Year and the Glazing Systems Players’ Player trophies, with Harry Darby named Williams Injury Specialists Man of Steel and Calum Coleman the AB Sundecks Most Valuable Player.

For the women’s team, who reached the Championship Playoff Final, Eleanor Dainty won the JRs Young Player, Leanne Johnson the Williams Injury Specialists Woman of Steel, Genna Banks the AB Sundecks Most Valuable Player, Megan Eastwood the Glazing Systems Players’ Player and Kellie Gray the Welch Mill Coaches’ Player.

For the Alliance team, Tony Doyle earned the Welch Mill Coaches’ Player award with Ben Grimshaw a popular choice as AB Sundecks Most Valuable Player.

Kyle Disley was named Williams Injury Specialists Man of Steel and Greg Walker the Glazing Systems Players’ Player.

For the first team Jack Reynolds was recognised as the JRs Young Player of the Year and two players hanging up their boots after great service earned honours as Craig Ashall was named AB Sundecks Most Valuable Player and Tom Farrimond the Williams Injury Specialists Man of Steel.

In his debut season Joe Connor took the Glazing Systems Players’ Player and long-serving Adam Thomason was named both the Welch Mill Coaches’ Player and the Peter Bell Top Try Scorer Award winner with 14 touchdowns.

The Peter McGuinness Supporters’ Player of the Year went to Darryl Kay while the Harry Westhead Shield winners, recognising outstanding contributions around the club, went to Celia Farrimond and Adam Thomason.

Celia also shared the Rod Raines Clubperson of the Year award with Alan Riding.
