JOHN Duffy’s new look Leigh Centurions squad will receive its first competitive outing against London Broncos.

Super League’s newest club will visit Leigh Sports Village on Sunday, January 27, kick-off 3pm.

And Duffy can’t wait to test his players against last season’s surprise Million Pound game winners at Toronto Wolfpack.

“It will be great for us,” said the former Featherstone boss. “Everyone knows we have been on the back foot since we started to get our squad together.

“So, to get Super League opposition will show us where we are at. The boys are looking forward to that.”

There will be a few familiar faces opposing the Centurions. Greg Richards and Nathan Mason appeared for Kieron Purtill’s team last year while Matt Fleming played in the second half of the 2017 campaign.

Broncos are coached by David Ward and Duffy says he wasn’t totally surprised by the club’s promotion.

“They were the only team I didn’t beat last season so I thought they might sneak up,” he insisted.

“There were great foundations put in place by Hendo (Andew Henderson) but ‘Wardy’ has been brilliant with them.

“They became more dogged last year and more resilient. I hope they stay up because they deserve it because of what they have been through with the club.

“’Wardy’ is a great bloke. He has done his apprenticeship really quickly but he has turned out to be a great coach.

“He will be excited about testing himself against the best in Super League.”

Leigh, who have Nick Gregson back in full contact training after pre-season surgery, enjoyed a contact game against Warrington last weekend and are due to meet Wigan this weekend.

“It was good for us and we got some decent feedback from the Warrington coaches.

“It’s good to gauge your fitness when you are up against full-time professionals,” he said.

“It’s obviously not full on like a real game but you get to look at the structures you want to put in place with defence and attack.”
