IT was a family affair for brothers Luke and Toby Adamson as both scored tries in the Centurions’ 26-33 defeat at Halifax.

With Andy Thornley also crossing the whitewash only sibling Iain Thornley missed out on what would have been a unique occurrence of two pairs of brothers each scoring tries in the same Leigh match.

As it was the Adamsons became the first pair of brothers to achieve the feat for the club since the Ruane brothers, Andy and David nearly 26 years ago.

The Ruanes both crossed in Leigh’s 46-20 win over Salford on 12 April 1993, David grabbing a brace in the game at Hilton Park.

Earlier in the same season the Ruane brothers had doubled up against Chorley and Hull, both games resulting in Leigh wins.

Brothers scoring for Leigh in the same game is a relatively rare occurrence.

First to achieve the feat were Runcorn born brothers Oliver and Harry Dunbavin in a 21-0 home win over Warrington on New Year’s Day 1898.

Welsh brothers Jim and Tom Coleman followed suit in a Challenge Cup victory over Bramley in 1899.

And another pair of Runcornian siblings, Tom and Sam Johnson, who between them played over 600 games for the club before the First World War, achieved the feat on six separate occasions between 1906 and 1910. On each occasion Leigh won.

It was nearly half a century before the next instance, Wigan born brothers Eric and Brian Callaghan scoring a try apiece in Leigh’s 30-15 win at Blackpool in October 1959.

Dave and Les Chisnall both crossed in a 19-13 win at Workington Town in September 1970 and repeated the feat in a 23-12 home win over Bradford Northern the following weekend.

And until the Ruanes came on the scene the last pair of brothers to both score in the same Leigh match were Tony Barrow and his brother Billy who both crossed in a 29-14 home win over Hull KR in March 1972.

So the feat has been achieved on 16 occasions since the Northern Union was formed in 1895- and every time Leigh won- until last Sunday.
