ATHERTON Colls came from behind to beat Widnes 2-1 at the Halton Stadium.

Widnes took a 12th-minute lead from a corner.

The ball was well headed out but George Webster on the edge of the box, was able to pick his spot in the bottom corner.

Widnes who had further chances in the first half with Danny Ventre and Niall Watson both chancing their arm.

Colls were like a different side after a few choice words from their manager at half-time.

Gaz Peet was first to show intent with a free-kick that slammed against the crossbar.

And just before the hours mark it was from another Peet left-foot free-kick delivery that brought about the equaliser.

Jordan Cover, leading the line as he did at times last season, lost his marker and nodded home a rare headed goal.

A period of pressure came to fruition on 65 minutes with the move of the game.

Conor Gaul nicked the ball back to Danny Lafferty to feed Ben Hardcastle in the middle. He superbly supplied Dave Sherlock out on the right to provide a sublime ball into the middle of the Widnes penalty area that arrived at the feet of Connor Hughes.

Taking time to compose himself and pick his spot, March’s Bowland Brewery Player of the Month slotted home the winner.

Both sides had further chances but it was to be Colls' day.

On Saturday Colls host Clitheroe in Evo-Stik Division One West, 3pm.
