IT is a big weekend at the top of the BetVictor Northern Premier Division, with Warrington Town right in the thick of it.

Sitting fourth, they welcome third-place Basford United to Cantilever Park tomorrow, kick off 3pm.

Second meets fifth at the same time as Lancaster City face Stalybridge Celtic and with leaders South Shields in FA Trophy action, all four sides have a big chance to gain ground.

A win for Yellows will see them close to within a point of the Mariners, with whom they drew 1-1 on Tyneside on Saturday.

Manager Paul Carden wants to see his side “impose themselves” more on home soil this weekend.

“Basford are another strong side who will feel they are going to be up there in this division. They certainly look capable of winning it,” he said.

“We’ve had tough games against them in the past, but we’ve done well in those games.

“We need to be better than we were on Saturday and try and impose ourselves more with the ball.”

Yellows should have midfielder Steve Jennings available again after he could only make the bench at Mariners Park due to illness.

Mitch Duggan deputised impressively for him in central midfield, with new addition Tyrone Duffus taking Duggan’s regular right-back spot.

“I thought Tyrone did really well,” Carden said of his full debutant.

“He obviously tired towards the end – other than a couple of games in pre-season, he hasn’t done a great deal – but you could see what he’s about.

“He’s a good athlete and he’s very comfortable on the ball. He’ll only get better with match fitness.”

With the Christmas period on the horizon, Carden’s options are starting to look more plentiful.

Jack Dunn got more valuable minutes under his belt against South Shields as he builds himself up after a serious knee injury while Josh Amis (foot) and Dylan Vassallo (knee) edge closer to returns.

Amis has not played since the 1-1 draw at Scarborough Athletic on September 28 but Carden is hopeful the big striker will not miss too much more action.

“Josh has been out of the protective boot for a week now,” he said.

“He’s in with the specialist this week and he’ll go through some tests to see where he’s at.

“Hopefully we can get him running soon – that’s going to be the biggest test for him.

“It’s all well and good saying it feels great walking on it but we need to see what it’s like when he’s running and pounding the ground.

“We’re hopeful he won’t be too much longer.”
