EXPERIENCED prop Alex Gerrard has committed his future to Leigh Centurions by signing a new deal until the end of 2021.

Twenty-eight-year-old Gerrard, who played more than 110 times for Widnes Vikings before leaving for Australia in 2018, joined Leigh in January after a brief spell in Australia playing for the Mackay Cutters Club.

The prop proved an immediate success, scoring on his debut in a 12-6 pre-season warm-up game against Wigan Warriors at Leigh Sports Village just days after arriving back in the UK. He earned #HN1498 by making his competitive debut for Leigh in the first game of the 2020 Betfred Championship at Dewsbury.

Originally from Lowton, Gerrard was pleased to have secured his future at Leigh Centurions and is already looking forward to the new season. He said: "I've really enjoyed my time at Leigh so far after being thrown in at the deep end. We made a good start to the 2020 season so it was obviously a big disappointment that the group didn't have the chance to show what they could do.

"There is a great group of lads at the Club and I know John Duffy very well having been at Widnes when he was still playing. What I like about John as a coach is that he makes the players' roles as clear as possible and this is a group which I think will come back even stronger next season."

Leigh Centurions Head Coach John Duffy believes Gerrard did enough in a short space of time to prove he was worthy of a new deal for 2021. He said: "Alex settled in at the Club very quickly and hit his straps from Day One. He is a player who can give us big minutes and this is a huge signing for us.

"I've known Alex for a long time from his days as an Academy player at Widnes Vikings and he's developed into a really good pro in that time. Although he only arrived at the Club in January, he really bought into what we are all about and his Super League experience will be invaluable."
