LEIGH Centurions have confirmed that another key member of the 2020 squad has agreed a contract extension.

Iain Thornley becomes the latest player to commit to the Club as they continue building for next year and he believes the Centurions have unfinished business in 2021.

He said: "We started the year off really well and we were all disappointed not to be able to finish the season.

"Hopefully by keeping a lot of that team together, we will have a head start for the new season and not as much adjusting to do because we all know each other. I'm very happy at Leigh and really enjoy being part of the set-up here and our objective for next year is the same as we started this: to achieve promotion."

Centurions Head Coach John Duffy said: "Iain has been there and done it in his career with Grand Finals and Challenge Cups at Wigan but since coming to Leigh he's had some changes in his life, adjusting to part-time and working towards his apprenticeship as an electrician.

"That will secure his future when his playing career is over, but it's also served to give him a new lease of life rugby-wise.

"He's really bought into being at Leigh and has been excellent for us and is such a big unit and a very talented player."

Born in Wigan, the centre, who earned #HN1384 was one of the club's most consistent performers in 2019, scoring 16 tries in 32 appearances.

He featured heavily amongst the nominations at the Club's end of season awards and won the SuperLeigh Player of the Year trophy.

The 28-year-old joined his elder brother Andy at Leigh after two seasons with Catalans Dragons. But it wasn't his first experience as a Centurions player – he represented the club as a dual reg player in 2013.

Memorably, Thornley scored a try in Wigan's Challenge Cup Final win over Hull FC at Wembley Stadium in 2013. He went on to earn a coveted Super League Grand Final winner's ring as Wigan beat Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford.

Thornley has also had spells at Hull KR and Salford Red Devils (on loan) and spent time at Sale Sharks Rugby Union Club.

Iain Thornley was sponsored by AB Sundecks in the 2020 season.
