OPENING Leigh Boxing Club’s first show of the new season at Lowton Civic Hall were the juniors.

Sean Connor, aged 13, of Westleigh High School, continued his winning run with a power-punching unanimous points win over Brendan McGregor of Blackpool Kingscote.

Next in was 10-year-old debutant Kian Flanagan of Sacred Heart Primary School.

Matched with Aaron Robertson of St Johns, Chorlton, both youngsters took part in a skills bout which has no winner or loser, is strictly controlled but gives the young boxing valuable ring experience.

Next up was the talented 13-year-old Zach Evans of Westleigh High School taking on Connor Shaw of Sandygate, Burnley.

In an entertaining bout Zach produced a calm display of boxing and movement to unanimously outpoint his onrushing opponent, both boxers being awarded bout of the night.

Team Leigh's second debutant of the evening, 15-year-old Jason Weir of St Marys High School, then made his bow.

A late change of opponent saw Jason taking on the more experienced Tom Maundy of Macclesfield, but in a whole hearted display the Leigh boxer pushed his opponent all the way, just losing out on a majority decision.

The final junior bout of the evening featured 13-year-old Josh Waterworth of Lowton High School against Reece "Rocky" Jackson of Sandygate, Burnley.

Another enthralling bout saw Josh's more controlled boxing and superior punching outpoint the very game visitor, and also give Josh the Simpson Heald Pearson junior boxer of the night award.

While the Team Leigh coaches are always looking for new talent, anyone can train alongside the boxers at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Gym.
