LEIGH Centurions put in a spirited display against champions St Helens in Alex Walmsley’s Testimonial game on a cold night.

Joe Wardle scored a second half try to keep the game in the balance until the closing minutes.

It was a fine overall display with some gutsy defence that kept Saints to just one score in the first half.

The new boys impressed, particularly Nene Macdonald who made his presence felt with some hard hitting defence and some strong runs.

Saints led 10-0 until Wardle stormed past Konrad Hurrell's tackle to score.

Three minutes from time former Centurion James Bell forced his way over, converted by testimonial man Alex Walmsley.
