WHAT a selfish letter from Conrad Elkins in the Journal recently.

We live in that outpost called Astley near the East Lancs Road.

The guided busway is no use to us at all.

Also a number of buses have been taken off us in Astley, including one to Bolton.

The estate where we live was built more than 50 years ago and when we moved in we were told it would be the last estate built in Astley.

Most of the people who live on this estate moved in when it was built.

These people are now pensioners who are giving up driving due to age or sickness.

So come on Transport for Greater Manchester, give us some transport to save us having to go round the world to get where we want to go.

Mr Elkins also says the guided busway has opened up Tyldesley.

Tyldesley is becoming an eating town with the number of cafes and takeaways expanding.

He also says the busway has resulted in less cars being on the roads in our towns.

I think he should look around the area and stand on Manchester Road in Astley between 3pm and 6pm and on Elliot Street in Tyldesley between 4pm and 6pm.

These roads are becoming the biggest car parks in the world. They are completely gridlocked at these times.

This is a result of Wigan Council giving permission for new housing estates all around Astley and not building any more main roads.

Mr Elkins himself states that what the complainers don’t realise is most road users are pedestrians and not car users.

This is my point. What the busway has done, combined with the removal of buses from other areas, is to isolate a lot of pedestrians.

The busway has only worked out well for the people of Tyldesley and causes problems for people in surrounding areas.

I suggest Mr Elkins gets out to the areas surrounding Tyldesley and looks at the problems the guided busway has caused to other people who come under Wigan Council.
