REGARDING the recent story about bodies buried at Tyldesley Top Chapel that appeared in the Journal I was a pupil at Upper George Street County Council Primary in 1947.
Going from the school to Bongs Market one day, I noticed that the perimeter walls of the chapel were hidden by a very high tarpaulin.
Nothing could be seen from the outside.
The stench was unbearable. As a seven-year-old I didn’t understand what it was but it was later explained that it was caused by the exhumation of the dead.
The gravestones originally stood upright, but after the wall was moved they were laid flat, and still are.
My claim to fame though is I was one of the first people on the number 30 Hag Fold to Blackmore bus and I was the first passenger, with my wife Pat, on the Leigh to Manchester guided busway, five days before it officially opened this April 3.
