I ENJOYED reading the piece about The Last Shift in the Journal.
I too, like Brian Gildart - 'a proper owd pit mon', remember the two brothers who lived in the original pub building as shown in the photograph.
They had a couple of fields and one of the pit lads went and gave them a lift haymaking. At the end of the day he asked how much he'd be paid.
"Payment? What payment? We'll catch thi' a bag o' rats fer thi dog!" was the brothers' reply.
