OAKWOOD Farm once again proved to be a fortress for Wilmslow Hockey Club’s men’s team on Saturday.

They defeated third-placed Leeds 3-2, with Andy Hunt playing a starring role.

Wilmslow were indebted to Matt Westbrook for a late winning goal.

From the start Wilmslow played with a level of skill and intensity rarely seen at the club.

High pressing brought eventual corners.

Although Bas Steffens sent the first effort wide of the post 10 minutes later he made no mistake to open the scoring.

Crucial to this domination was an inspired performance in midfield by man-of-the-match- Hunt.

Soon after a fine move by Hunt and Steve Edmonds provided a tap in by Pete Hallinan to make it 2-0.

It was not all one-sided however and goalkeeper Pickering was called upon to make a couple of excellent saves.

In the second half Wilmslow were on the back foot, bringing out some good defensive work from Martin Wright and the ever reliable Pickering.

Leeds finally won a penalty corner and scored from a flick into the roof of the net.

Not long after sustained Leeds pressure deservedly earned them an equaliser.

Wilmslow fought back but their long ball game was not coming off.

Sensing the game drifting into a home draw coach Turner called for a final effort in the last five minutes.

When Edmonds was upended with the ball at his feet in the circle up strode Westbrook to take the penalty flick. Wilmslow’s most experienced player made no mistake to seal the win.

Wilmslow’s seconds dropped a couple of points with a 2-2 draw away to Alderley’s thirds.

The Wilmslow thirds also drew 2-2 against close rivals Liverpool Sefton but remain in top spot.

The fourths had a narrow 3-2 win against Macclesfield which also put them on top of the table.

Perhaps the best win of the day was the fifths trouncing Sale’s thirds 7-1, with Danny Cork scoring five and acting skipper Livesey the other two.
